Who in America is having all the fun and has pictures to prove it?

As an event photographer, I am in the business of spying on people having fun. After 10 years on the job, I've seen all manner of family, society, political, and corporate good times.  Last week I was impressed!

The American Association of Professional Landmen filled the spacious ballrooms and meeting rooms of Boston's plush Park Plaza hotel.  Members -- the business side of oil and gas -- and their families and heroes came from all over the country to celebrate the good times in the industry and gear up for the 2012 presidential elections.

The keynote speaker, Karl Rove, former Deputy Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to President George W. Bush, bashed the current administration and gave me a copy of his new book: Courage and Consequence: My Life as a Conservative in the Fight.

The motivational speaker, Emily Cook, free-style skiing champion, told the story of her fight for the Olympic gold.

The event had a warm old-fashioned close-knit feeling to it.  The AAPL, Park Plaza Hotel, and Destination Partners, Inc succeeded brilliantly in showing oil & gas conservatives good times in my liberal city.  If you don't believe me, check out the pictures.

AAPL's mission is to promote the highest standards of performance for all land professionals, to advance their stature and to encourage sound stewardship of energy and mineral resources.

Doing What Matters

"Doing What Matters" was the slogan of this year's annual conference of the University Professional & Continuing Education Association.

To see more conference photos click here

They were talking about flexible coursework.  But as fundamentals have a way of translating across businesses, I found their conclusions to be true in my own line of work -- photography:

What matters?
  • The quality of the experience --  Yep: be professional, ready for anything & make it fun!
  • Gathering data to prove our impact -- The impact of a well-organized event is double when captured on camera.  Need more proof?
  • Flexibility in time and place -- Went all the way from Boston to Toronto.  Wouldn't have missed it for anything!
  • Thinking in new ways for new times - Photos are great for SEO!
What matters to you?

Blue Hill County Club

On November 20 2010, I joined Katrina and Xavier, a lovely couple from Boston, for their wedding celebration. The ceremony took place in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Boston and the reception was held at Blue Hill Country Club in Canton, MA. It was beautiful and elegant wedding.  All the decoration details - from ladies' dresses to the flower petals along the path to the artfully decorated wedding cake - supported a main theme of the event - a vivid combination of white a scarlet. Wedding party had the most adorable youngest participant  - a little girl in a princess-like white dress with scarlet sash and shoes. All in all, it was one of the most visually inspiring events.

PALS Children Chorus Concert

PALS Children's Chorus filled the house for its 15th Annual Family Concert at First Parish ChurchBrookline, on Sunday, January 30.  150 children in four ensembles, ranging in age from 6 to 14 performed.  They sang indigenous music from from Ghana, the Torres Straits of Australia and North and South America, tied together by English-language songs of survival, unity, celebration and strength.  Junior PALS sang a preview of its upcoming World Premiere of "The Wolf and the Seven Goats" by Curtis Hughes, to be performed with Boston Musica Viva on Sunday, February 6.  The concert ended with a spirited performance of "We Are Family" sung by all 150 children, inspiring the audience to clap and tap their feet.

Santa Clauses

This year, our official holiday season began on Saturday, December 4th. Me and my friends gathered together in a yard outside of my house to participate in some little arts and crafts session. We made some pretty Santa Clauses out of the logs. First, everyone painted a face on the cut side of the log, and after that everybody used as much imagination as possible to decorate the figures. You can see the final results on the pictures below. Our Santa was put next to the front door to welcome guests and visitors during upcoming holidays.

Bob's Furniture Recognition Party

Recently, I was invited to photograph a corporate holiday event for a local branch of Bob's Discount Furniture Corporation. This is a retail furniture chain, which apparently is quite popular right now in New England. The celebration took place in Cafe Escadrille in Burlington, MA and at Bethwood, NJ.  Mario Hache was very kind to recommended Julia Zhogina Photography to the organizers, and that's how I found myself on one chilly December day working in Cafe Escadrille. The restaurant itself is a very nice venue - elegant and classy and very busy with the event planning. The invitees to this gala-dinner were top salesmen from all the Massachusetts stores. They had a company's mascot, "the Bob", a mannequin figure with a beard in yellow t-shirt - which was a good idea to use for group photos. Apparently, there are quite a number of salesmen who've made sales for more then $1,000,000 in 2010. Personally, I was very impressed by those numbers - if, for example, a bedroom set is sold for $600, that means that a very successful salesman, in order to reach a million mark, needs to sell at least 6 of these sets every day. Overall, it looked like Bob's Discount Furniture had a good year - people were having a good time and looked genuinely happy.

Chad Michael Peters

Hello. I am Julia Zhogina, a wedding photographer.  And this is my first blog post.
I am not a big writer. I don’t even like to talk all that much. So the blog wasn’t something I would do for fun. Honestly, I was hoping to avoid it all together – by using just about any other search-marketing trick known to man. Until I met Chad Michael Peters.
If you are in the wedding business and don’t already know Chad Michael Peters – you want to know him. He is the best known event planner in Massachusets. I ran into Chad Michael Peters at the opening reseption of The Boston Wedding magazine.
- Hi, - I said - I am Julia.
- Hi, - he said – Are you a blogger?
I was not.
- Everybody has to have a blog, – he said. - We can’t work together until you have one.
So that’s what Chad Michael Peters told me. And that’s why I have this blog. I am curious to see how it will skyrocket my search rankings. In any event, I will let you know.
